Turks and Greeks exempt from the population exchange are shown in dark color. (e.g., Western Thrace and Istanbul)
Although referred to as the Turkish-Greek population exchange, it was fundamentally a Muslim-Christian exchange. Indeed, Orthodox Turks of Zihni were not included in the exchange, while Muslim Greeks of Grevena were subjected to it. Additionally, Istanbul and Western Thrace were among the regions exempt from the exchange.
