Islamization of Eastern Thrace "1877-1927"
Categories: Balkans
The 50-year transformation of Eastern Thrace, one of the primary settlement centers for Rumelian Muhajirs.
According to the "1520-35" cadastral tax registers (tahrir defterleri) from the early 16th century, the Islamic Community (Millet) comprised 56% of the population in Eastern Thrace. Subsequently, the Muslims of Eastern Thrace migrated into the interior of Rumelia for various reasons, causing a sharp decline in Eastern Thrace's population. During this period, the non-Muslim population attained an overwhelming majority. Indeed, in the first Ottoman census "1831", Muslims constituted only 30% of the population in Eastern Thrace. Reliable data for the intervening 300 years are lacking. In the census conducted in "1893" following the first wave of migration after the War of 93 "1877-78", the Muslim population appears to have risen to around 39%. In 1906, when migrations from the Danube slowed, the Muslim population in Eastern Thrace stood at 43%. Following the Balkan Wars "1912-13", a second wave of migration raised the Muslim population to around 55%, and nearly four centuries later, the influx of muhajirs restored the Muslim population to a majority in the region. With the 1923-27 Greco-Turkish population exchange, it reached the level of 99%.
